Egils Pilsner has been part of the national spirit of Icelanders since 1916. After the success of Egils Malt, Tómas Tómasson decided to start making Pilsners, which was below the legal production limit for alcohol, which had been set at 2.25% at the turn of the century in 1900.
Pilsner soon became one of Ölgerðin's most sought after products, and when King Kristján X of Denmark paid an official visit in 1926, he named Ölgerðin a royal courtroom, where the king's entourage was most likely to come to Pilsner and drink throughout the trip. This is where the crown comes from, which can still be seen in Ölgerðin's logo.
