Icelanders have used Iceland moss through the ages. It was believed to be a wholesome and nutritious food, rich in minerals like iron, calcium and dietary fibers. Iceland moss was prepared in different ways like Iceland moss milk, pudding, in bread and as tea. Iceland moss (“mountain grass”) is an arctic plant that takes 5-10 years to grow.
It cannot be cultivated and must be hand-picked and dried cool for preservation.
As medicine, Iceland moss was mostly used for respiratory complains like respiratory catarrh, chronic bronchitis, asthma and tuberculosis. Digestive and stomach disorder like gastritis, dyspepsia, constipation and as an appetite stimulant. It was also used on dry skin, eczema and slow-healing wounds.
There are four variants now available; Mixtura with liquorice and Mixtura with honey and peppermint, mainly for growns-ups and Mixtura with chocolate and Mixtura with orange, especially for children from the age of 1.
